Welcome to the Fold Posted by Hello

I’m a big fan of Ipods really. The feeling of being able to store your entire music collection into one sleek looking package that fits into your palm is quite satisfying. Having an Ipod is like having control. Being able to summon any song you want at any given moment gives you complete control over your environment, the audible part that is. With play lists you can play a set of songs that suits your specific moods. It also has social reverence: you can get to know a person a little better by looking at each other’s Ipod collection. And there’s also that status symbol attached to it. Now I must admit that I don’t own an Ipod or any Mp3 player for that matter. Honestly, I find it quite surprising for such a technology-driven individual like me (I also don’t own any console systems to which I have been dissed countless times!). Even my mom asks why I don't have one.

A few weeks ago while sitting at a pub with some classmates, one of them lashed out an Ipod because someone wanted to suddenly listen to some Coldplay. Like a domino effect, two others proceeded to whoop out their ‘minis’ and the whole place turned into an ‘Ipod public sphere.’ Some other guy had a different type of Mp3 player but he went with the flow. I didn’t really feel left out with my aging mini-disc player with its 20 or so songs per disc, I just don’t feel anything for Ipods and I don’t have the need for one. But then again as I stated above, I’m a big fan of them! So why can’t I just give in and go get one? I actually had the opportunity once about 3 years ago, before they really came out in the European market. I was to buy the 20gig Ipod for a friend of mine while I was in Hong Kong. Sitting in a teeny electronics store at Tsim Sha Tsui computer centre, I glossed over the Ipod’s brochure while my ‘gwai-lo’ friend (slang for white guy) Seamus kept muttering about how he didn’t need such technological drivel in his life (ironically he was leaping with joy when his Da got him a Zen Creative player last Christmas and ripped well over a thousand songs from me). I knew this Ipod was going to sell like hot cakes when it hit the shelves back home. But yet I didn’t proceed to buy for myself. Went for the mini-disc player instead.

Some sociologists have begun assessing the cultural impact of Ipods and their users. My favourite terms so far have been ‘Poddie Culture’ and ‘attack of the white earphone brigade.’ I fear my view of Ipods will decline over the next few years, one thing’s for sure that I’ll never own one because I’ve already crossed that line (as in if I wanted to have one, I would’ve done it a long time ago). I am starting to notice those generic white earphones more & more these days, be it on the bus or in queues. Even the ‘goy’ in the ‘get the look’ section in the Sunday Tribune today can be noticeably seen with them (yeah, the muppet with the pink sweater). I’d be cynical to say that Ipods are becoming superficial fashion statements (“what colour’s yours?”), kind of like a ‘triumph of style over substance’ sort of thing. There’s even a new service called 'Feed My Pod'( http://www.feedmypod.com/ ) that hires technicians to load your music onto your Ipod for you (at 99c per CD). What utter complete trash to spend your money on! Capitalism has never looked so pathetic.

I have nothing against Ipods and its users, I just hate mainstream culture and popular trends. I just hope that soon someday that there will be more diversity in the market place (in all cases) and more competition against Apple. So for the moment I’ll just hold it in and grind my teeth whenever I see those bland generic white earphones.
I'm a big fan of Ipods, really.

Last month, Apple announced 1st Quarter Sales of Ipods rose by 74% ($300 million)
PS: can you imagine they actually sell these t-shirts

The New Ten Commandments

In the show 'The New Ten Commandments,' Channel 4 has commissioned a survey to ask what new commandments should be made according to today's society. Over 40,000 Britons took part and they have voted 'Treat others as you would like to be treated' as their upmost numero uno commandment.
Others include 'Be honest' at number 2, followed by 'Do not kill' at number 3. Additionally, over half of them also say that euthanasia and abortion can be considered exceptions to number 3.
While it's good to revise doctrines and laws according to today's changing world, I can't help but say how pointless this whole programme was. Not mentioning the gross inequality of those who voted in proportion to the entire British population (1:6000), the structure of the programme reminded me of those irrelevant 'Top 10' movie cars or whatever on Sky. "This is what you have voted for... this is what you think is the most important..." is what the presenter (John Snow) keeps repeating, trying to gain some personal reference with the viewer.
It's as if that suddenly people are going to wake up each day and indoctrinate themselves with these new so-called commandments. These, and the original 10 were wrought with loop holes and banal generalities. Yet Channel 4 packages them into PR-like mumbo jumbo while instigating competitveness between the popularity of each commandment. For goddsake, these are moral standards, not people's favorite sci-fi characters!
Commercialising on religion and people's ideas of moral standards is just wrong. Why don't broadcasters go up a level and do something constructive like ask how the EU constitution should be like. I bet John Snow's so proud to be Moses for the night, at least he didn't have to lug two stone tablets up a hill.

Behold: Bit Torrent

Will the real Bram Cohen please stand up? Posted by Hello

Don't let the hairdo fool you, this is the man who invented Bit Torrent, the next step above P2P and new enemy of gigantic commerical media corporations.
Bit Torrent is a file sharing programme that differs much from the likes of Kazza and eDonkey. All the contents such as software, music, movies and games are embedded inside each Bit Torrent file so there is no danger of it being traced, well so far anyway.
There are many sites that hosts these files such as www.torrentspy.com that are filled with all kinds of media. Missed the last UEFA cup match? Or can't wait for the new episodes of whatever? Now you can download them at your own discretion.
The advent of P2P and Bit Torrent hosting has already drastically changed the nature of the medium. Most TV programmes found on Bit Torrent sites excludes commercials so advertisers will feel the brunt of this. Broadcasters know this too and it's time they made their move: either to severly clamp down on this trend or capitalise on it. TV ratings may soon be associated with 'online TV ratings'. But this online broadcasting will make things very volatile; a new TV show may become insanely popular overnight and vice versa. If this trend does continue expodentially, the content distribution industry will soon find itself redundant. And I reply by, boo-frickety-hoo!
By 2006, there will be approximately 40 million Bit Torrent renegades. Viva la revolution

The Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou

What an amazing film to close off the film festival. This time it was more like it: reception at the Savoy cinema, guests and representatives, even a long speech. No free wine though :(
Anyway, the film is about a Jacques Costeau like character called Steve Zissou played by the venerable Bill Murray. Flanked by other actors such as Angelica Heuston, Owen Wilson, William Dafoe and Cate Blanchett (looks great with a tan!), as well as other members of Team Zissou, they venture across the ocean to rescue their 'bond stooge' from pirates and go searching for a mysterious jaguar shark.
To just call this a comedy dosen't do it justice: it's a real intelligent, mellow and colorful film. If you liked The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore (from the same director Wes Anderson) then you can argue that this is Anderson's best work to date.
Life Aquatic should be released next week.

Overview of the year of the pig for 2005

For all you 21's out there, this is the overview of what's to come in 2005..

Some sentimental changes may present themselves during this year. Keep using your imagination and you will turn any and all obstacles to your advantage. Everybody knows that routine and monotony are the worst enemies of love! Get out of a rut and look for some fantasy in love. Be alive in the present moment; do not spend your time thinking about the past or spinning fantasies about the future! The Pig must also cultivate tolerance, for this supreme virtue is capable of reviving extinct or dying sentimental fires.

Feng shui what-cha-majiggy experts also said that it's a bad year for pigs education and career-wise. I'm not too sceptical, but i do think i have an advantage! Firstly, since this is my last ever semester in college, we only get one exam. And career?? Pssh, don't think I'll be seeing a regular paycheck anytime soon.. I'll be walking the earth like David Carradine man!! (and getting money from the 'rents with Western Union, lol)

Another uneventful saturday...

Surprised by the big turnout for Kung Fu Hustle. It was on at UGC 17 so especially surprising. I think most of the viewers were a bit bedazzled with the whole exaggerated Kung Fu stuff, but if they've seen Shaolin Soccer I guess they know what to expect.
Saw that crazy old lady on Henry Street again, think she was talking to the pavements this time! I wonder if she knows that other crazy old cook that feeds all them pigeons on O'Connell street...

First Entry

What a rip-off the Jameson Film Festival is... 8 euro for membership and another 9 for each film.. It didn't even have any big celebrities or guests. There is zero atmosphere in the films i've seen, the only thing that feels different is when a festival representative would thank us for coming prior to the screening.
Still, I guess it's a good launch pad for new Irish films such as 'the Mighty Celt' and the controversial '9 Songs.' I've got 2 more films to watch this weekend: Kung Fu Hustle (which i've seen 5 times!) and Life Aquatic-Steve Zissou.
